Transformer Connections Trainer

DAC #491 Transformer Connections Trainer

This realistic training device replicates the conditions and circumstances that a utility worker encounters when making common transformer connections in the field.

A wide variety of activities can be performed at reduced voltages for safety. (A 208 VAC, 3-phase source is stepped down creating a 41 VAC 3-phase system).

Both three-phase and single-phase applications are provided. Using banana jacks, ground connections, primary connections, and secondary connections are easily made.

The Transformer Connections Trainer represents a safe, inexpensive, efficient, yet realistic alternative to paper-based learning and full-voltage field experience.

  • Welded steel cabinet.
  • Modular design, allowing for both single-phase and three-phase activities.
  • Banana jack connections used throughout.
  • Low voltage operation using 5:1 dry transformers.
  • Internally fused.
  • Overall size of 33"L x 29"W x 38"H (125 lbs).
  • Packaging for shipment via motor freight.

  • Perform single-phase transformer connections.
  • Analyze transformer single phase voltages.
  • Identify three-phase connections.
  • Interconnect multiple transformers in Wye or Delta configurations.
  • Analyze three-phase voltage readings.
  • Identify transformer turns ratio (TTR).
  • Demonstrate how capacitors effect line voltage and current.
  • Demonstrate how three-phase transformer connections can produce incorrect motor rotation.
  • Demonstrate how to parallel single-phase and three-phase transformers.
  • Demonstrate line droop.
  • Simulate a burned-out transformer in a three-phase bank.
